Being Ourselves

Mental health problemsaffect about 1 in 10 children and young people. Alarmingly 70% of children andyoung people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriatetreatments at a sufficiently early age.

The emotional wellbeing of a child is just as important as their physical health. Good mentalhealth allows children to develop resilience to cope with whatever life throwsat them and grow into well rounded healthy adults.

SMEF are introducingour new FREE mental health project ‘Being Ourselves’ which aims to identify thekey issues that 8-13-year-old ethnic minority children face today.

We plan to run 5workshops with expert organisations including CAHMS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and youthworkers about the followings; cultural identity and cultural roots, identity and discrimination including bullying, social media and the use of mobile phones, stress and anxiety.

All workshops will beinteractive, using a combination of art, drama and sports. We would like tokeep parents/guardians involved. For some sessions parents/guardians andchildren will be separated, parents/guardians will be given case studies andtopics of interest to discuss while sessions with the children will alsocontinue in parallel.

Workshops will bestarting soon, dates and times to be discussed, please contact Fatima on admin@smef.org.uk or 01483 497 292.
